A short service for unison voices with congregation and organ accompaniment
Peter Hallock wrote three Mass settings, the first a Mass of Saint Mark composed for Christmas 1955, the second a Missa Brevis in B minor composed for Easter Day 1962, and A Simple Missa Brevis. Of the three, only this one is complete.
In addition to the Trisagion, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei published here, the Mass also included as its Song of Praise the Dignus es (Canticle 18 in the Book of Common Prayer, 1979, beginning โSplendor and honor and kingly power are yoursโ). The canticle will be published after the editor has been able to reconstruct it from extant instrumental parts. As is typical with many Hallock psalms and other liturgical settings, text as set originally did not coincide with approved texts. (As part of his compositional process, Hallock often memorized texts before setting them to music; memorization was not always accurate.) The editor has revised the Mass setting to conform to text as found in the Book of Common Prayer, 1979, with one exception: โBlessed is heโ has been modified to โBlest is the one.โ There are versions of this Mass with varying instrumental accompaniment; full scores and instrumental parts are available from the publisher.
The following additional instruments may accompany A Simple Missa Brevis: Snare drum and/or tambourine, Triangle, Tubular bells, Handbells, Vibraphone, Alto and/or bass xylophone, Glockenspiel, Harp, Celesta, Piano, Guitar, String bass. Contact us for parts.
