There is a stream

$2.60

An anthem for unaccompanied SATB voices with divisi. The image of the living stream which revives the heart suggests that it is appropriate for the Holy Eucharist and also Holy Baptism. Because of its direct quotation of verses from Revelation 21:11-22:1 and 1 Corinthians 2:9-10, this work is an ideal communion motet for All Saintsโ€™ Day. This edition provides both the original ending from 1958 (page 8, last four bars) and a more extended one written in 1987.

Lyrics

There is a stream that issues forth from Godโ€™s eternal throne,
A living stream clear as the crystal stone.
The stream doth water paradise,
It makes the angels sing.
One cordial drop revives my heart
hence all my joys do spring.
Eye hath not seen nor ear hath heard
from fancy tis concealed what Thou Lord
has laid up for thine and hath to me revealed.
โ€”John Mason (died 1694)

First performance on March 28, 1954.
