Dedicated to Eva Heinitz, Professor of Music Emeritus, University of Washington. Composition began in 1972; the first performance was on Palm Sunday 1973 (April 15). Subsequent revisions commenced in 1986.

AT COMPLINE ON PALM SUNDAY, 9:30 pm
Peter Hallock has composed a new setting of “The Lamentations of Jeremiah the Prophet” for the Compline Choir and solo cello. Page Smith, a lifetime member of St. Mark’s, a member of the Cathedral Choir and of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the 17-year old daughter of Ellen Smith, will be the cellist for this premiere performance.

Incipit Lamentatio Jeremiae Prophetae.
Quomodo sedet sola civitas plena populo: facta est. Quasi vidua domina Gentium: princeps provinciarum facta east sub tributo.
Plorans ploravit in nocte, et lacrime ejus in maxillis ejus: non est qui consoletur eam ex omnibus caris ejus: omnes amici ejus spreverunt eam, et facti sung ei inimici.

Here begins the Lamentation of Jeremiah the Prophet.
How deserted lies the city once so full of people: how like a widow she is, who once was great amont the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary.
Bitterly she weeps in the night, and tears are upon her cheeks: among all her lovers there is none to comfort her. All of her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord your God.
